Fashions
Fashions of the 50's reflected fears and aspirations of its time. After WWII women were forced to go back home and do the tradional women duties such as raising children and looking after the house. 1950 fashions emphasized fragile feminity, in the form of soft shoulders, stiletto heels, wrist length gloves and full billowing skirts. Even working womens outfits consisted of pencil slim skirts and little hats with veil and feathers. The hour glass shaped figure of full skirts, soft shoulders, and a tight waist originated in the 1940's by Christian Diors seminal collection. Corsettes were also a fashion in the 50's.
Mens fashion was clean cut and conservative. Gray flannel suits and penny loafer shoes was the style among men, which originated from Ivy League colleges. Hats started to vanish in the 50's by men and women.
